Marley Eder leads a multifaceted career as a performer and educator in Los Angeles. He currently serves as 2nd flute/piccolo of Symphony San Jose, principal flute of San Luis Obispo Symphony, and regularly performs with orchestras throughout the southwest. As a regular sub with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, he has performed over 120 concerts over the past three years and can be heard on several releases including the recent album Khatchaturian – Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Dudamel & the LA Phil on the label Decca. He also performs as a sub with the New West Symphony, Modesto Symphony, Marin Symphony, Las Vegas Philharmonic, and Orchestra Santa Monica. Additionally, he has performed with the San Francisco Symphony and the London Symphony Orchestra, where he filled in on same-day notice to perform 2nd flute under Sir Simon Rattle during their North American tour in 2022.
An active teacher, Eder is on the faculty of Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at Cal State University Long Beach, Santa Monica College, Glendale Community College, and the Orange County School of the Arts. Additionally, he has recently spent several years as visiting faculty at one of his favorite places on the planet: the Northern California Flute Camp at Hidden Valley.
A prize winner in numerous competitions, Eder was awarded 1st prize in the Music Teachers National Association, San Diego Flute Guild, and Louisiana Flute Society Young Artist competitions, as well as 2nd prize in the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition and Myrna Brown Artist Competitions. As a result of reaching the semi-finals in the Nielsen International Flute Competition in 2019, he performed C.P.E. Bach’s Flute Concerto with members of the Odense Symphony (Denmark) on Medici TV.
In frequent demand in solo and chamber music capacities, Eder has performed at conventions for the Music Teacher National Association, San Diego Flute Guild, and National Flute Association, as well as collaborated on chamber music series such as the LA Phil Green Umbrella, Ojai Music Festival, Desert Hotsprings Classics, and New Music on the Bayou series. He has been a featured concerto soloist with orchestras including multiple appearances with the Glendale College Philharmonic, San Luis Obispo Symphony, USC’s EDGE ensemble, Symphony of the Vines, the Louisiana State University Philharmonia, Colburn’s Orchestra de Camera, and the Eastern Music Festival Symphony – the performance of which was described as “elegant, with a warm tone and brilliant technique” by the Classical Voice of North Carolina. His playing has been aired with a variety of ensembles on radio stations including NPR, KUSC, and KCRW.
Eder completed his Doctor of Musical Arts in flute performance at the Thornton School of Music at University of Southern California where he held a position as a student instructor. He earned his previous degrees from the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas (BM) and Louisiana State University (MM) where he was a graduate teaching assistant. He is immensely grateful for the guidance and support of his teachers: Jim Walker, Anne Zentner, Marianne Gedigian, Dr. Katherine Kemler, and Rosy Sackstein.
